Nutrition for the Long Watch: Fueling Your 12-Hour Shift

8 min read • By Dr. James Vance
The 3 AM crash is not a willpower problem, it is a fuel problem. A shift that starts with a large fast-carbohydrate meal guarantees a blood sugar collapse six hours later. Anchor every shift on protein and fat first. Eggs, chicken, greek yogurt and nuts keep insulin steady across a long tour. Split intake into three small meals rather than one big one. Large meals divert blood flow to digestion right when you need it in your brain and legs. Watch the caffeine cutoff. Caffeine has a five to six hour half life, so a 2 AM energy drink is still in your system when you try to sleep at 8 AM.
